A goal from Tyrese Shade was enough to see Eastleigh take all three points from his former club in the West Midlands.
An early, tenacious finish from Shade put the Spitfires ahead in the 11th minute before Eastleigh held firm to protect the valuable points.
It took ten minutes for the first piece of action to come, and it came in the form of a McDonnell save after a free-kick was launched in by Jamey Osborne and met by the head of a Solihull player.
Less than a minute later, Shade went through on goal and managed to get past the goalkeeper.
The attacker saw numerous shots blocked by the defender before poking the final effort into the back of the net to give the Spitfires the lead.
The next chance fell the way of the hosts when Jack Stevens went in behind before slicing his shot and watching it go well wide.
Shade found himself with another chance in front of goal who forced a good save from Killian Barrett on the break.
With ten minutes until the break, Taylor lurched onto a heavy touch from Newton before the Eastleigh man was taken out by the defender.
Despite looking like the last defender, Newton was booked and that was just one of seven bookings that the referee brandished throughout the match.
As half-time approached, Paul McCallum went down holding his calf and shortly after was replaced by Chris Maguire.
The visitors went in at the interval, one goal to the good thanks to Shade’s determined finish.
It took 18 minutes for the first chance to come in the second half and fell the way of Conor Wilkinson whose shot flew well over the bar from distance.
Just two minutes later, the goalscorer, Shade, contributed defensively as he cleared a Solihull effort off the line in fine fashion to keep Eastleigh’s slender advantage intact.
Shade was at the forefront of all things good during the match and created a brilliant opening for Maguire after squaring the ball to him.
Maguire wasn’t able to hit the target and the chance to double the lead went begging.
McDonnell was required in the 72nd minute and he responded with a smart stop after Boutin’s attempted clearance ricocheted off an attacker and allowed the Moors an opportunity.
Six minutes from the 90-minute mark, Shade’s powerful shot was blocked meaning he wasn’t able to bag a brace on his visit to his old stomping ground.
Just as four mInutes of stoppage time was announced, Solihull Moors went through on goal and an equaliser looked certain but for McDonnell who held firm and stayed big to deny the hosts.
The game ended with the Spitfires taking all three points from their trip to the West Midlands which sees Eastleigh go one point off the play-offs.
