The Spitfires exit the Emirates FA Cup, following a last gasp goal from Southend.

A tight game that saw both sides have decent chances was played out at the Silverlake Stadium, right up until the 94th minute, with Aribim Pepple breaking the deadlock.

The game got off to a bit of a slow start, with neither team really managing to create any proper chances within the first 15 minutes or so.

Macauley Bonne did have a half-chance early on, following some confusion at the back from the Spitfires. He had the ball deflect onto him, with it then ricocheting towards Joe McDonnell who stopped the ball with ease.

Tyrese Shade looked set to score, after getting through one-on-one with Collin Andeng-Ndi in the 18th minute. He received the ball from around 25-yards away from the target, but could not bury his effort, with Andeng-Ndi getting down low to deny him.

The next chance of the game came just after the half hour mark. Joe Gubbins connected with a cross at the back post but saw his effort trickle into the palms of McDonnell.

Chris Maguire had a curled effort blocked away from danger just before the interval. With the two sides going into half-time with nothing between them.

The Spitfires had the first go on goal after the break, with Jake Taylor blazing a shot over the crossbar from the edge of the box in an attempt to open the scoring.

Just like in the start of the first-half, neither side really were able to create many shots on goal after the break, with the next chance coming for Maguire in the 75th minute. He attempted a volley from the edge of the box that sailed just over the crossbar.

Niall Maher darted a dangerous looking cross towards the box with seven minutes to go, Andeng-Ndi was forced to catch the cross to stop it from potentially finding the back of the net.

Pepple popped up with a goal deep into injury-time to give Southend the lead of the game.

The Spitfires could not respond in the remaining moments, and would go on to lose.
