Scott Bartlett says his side are well placed heading into the next fixture after carefully balancing recovery with preparation following a demanding festive schedule.

With travel and a congested run of games over Christmas taking its toll, the Spitfires were given a short period to reset before returning to the training ground. Bartlett feels striking that balance has been key as the squad prepare for another demanding run of games.

“It was important for the players to rest their bodies and minds ahead of the next set of fixtures, so we had a couple of days’ recovery after Boston due to the travel and schedule over the Christmas period,” Bartlett explained. “Other than that, it’s been business as usual and the players have responded well in training. At this time of year you always have one or two things to contend with, but we’re in a good place overall.”

Attention now turns to the challenge of Southport, with Bartlett expecting a physical and well-organised opponent who will test his side across the pitch.

“Southport are well organised, they have a physical presence and will enjoy the challenge,” he said. “As with any game, we prepare in the same way and focus on being the best version of ourselves. The players have trained well and now need to show the same commitment and focus on matchday.”

The manager also stressed the importance of maintaining standards across the squad, with a busy run of fixtures requiring contributions from everyone available.

“It’s their job to be ready and, in fairness, they have been,” Bartlett added. “We train well and everyone will be needed during this next period, so that’s the message, train well and be ready.”

Bartlett believes the mentality within the group has been a real positive in recent weeks, with competition for places helping to maintain standards and ensure the squad are ready when called upon.

The Spitfires boss also paid tribute to the club’s supporters, highlighting the role they continue to play both home and away during a demanding period of the season.

“The support we get has been first class, both home and away,” Bartlett said. “It means a lot to the players, who in fairness give everything for them. There’s a real energy around the group at the moment, a strong attitude, and I think the supporters enjoy seeing that.”

The Spitfires take on Southport on Saturday 10 January 2026 (3pm) in the Fourth Round of the Isuzu FA Trophy before hosting Brackley Town in what will be a quick turnaround for the Hampshire side.
